Barry Raftery, B.A.Sc., P. Eng.
Forensic Engineer
Barry Raftery is a licensed Professional Engineer who graduated from the University of Toronto in 1986 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Since May of 1988, Barry has worked as a forensic engineer, specializing in the field of accident reconstruction. In addition to being the lead engineer in the investigation and reconstruction of more than 2,500 collisions, Barry has completed training at the Institute of Police Technology and Management, at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida, USA. In 1991, Barry started Raftery Engineering Investigations Ltd., and has since been providing services to the insurance industry and the legal profession.
Over the past 25 years, Barry has investigated and reconstructed a broad range of collisions involving passenger vehicles, pedestrians, motorcycles, bicycles, snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles and tractor-trailer combinations. Although Raftery Engineering is located in Toronto, Barry has worked on cases across Canada, and throughout the United States. Barry has been qualified as an expert witness to provide opinion evidence in accident reconstruction-related matters on more than 150 occasions. He has testified at all trial levels in the Province of Ontario. His evidence has been called by Defence Counsel and by Plaintiff Counsel in Civil matters. In collisions that have resulted in criminal charges being laid, Barry has been called to testify for the Defence.
In addition to being a licensed member of the Professional Engineers of Ontario and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) , Barry is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the Canadian Society of Forensic Science (CSFS), the National Association of Professional Accident Reconstruction Specialists (NAPARS), and the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE).
